A pioneering technology developed by the bank and the acquirer, in accordance with the standards and rules of BACEN, Pix by Proximity can be used by any consumer who has an account enabled for payment using NFC. The functionality is being made available in phases, and all Itaú Unibanco customers will be able to add their Itaú account to their digital wallet so they can pay just by bringing their cell phone closer, without needing to open the bank’s Superapp at the time of purchase.
A pioneer of payment methods in Brazil, Itaú remains attentive to the needs of its customers and the technological transformations of the financial sector. In this sense, the bank follows the wide adoption of Pix as a payment method and has acted at the frontier of innovations to deliver the best solutions to its customers. In addition to Pix by Contact, in January 2025 the bank’s customers will also have access to Recurring Payments via Pix, and even more complete experiences in Pay in Installments with Pix for Legal Entities.
“Itaú believed, adopted and invested in Pix from the first moment, especially for its potential for financial inclusion and improvement of the payment journey experience. Now, contactless Pix arrives to transform the way Brazilians use it in face-to-face transactions. We strongly believe in this potential and the positive impact it will bring to the entire Brazilian payment chain, and we are working to make it reach as many people as possible. Therefore, we have developed a solution at Laranjinhas da Rede that can be used by all consumers, in any qualified financial institution,” says Angelo Russomanno, director of payments for Legal Entities at Itaú Unibanco.
The announcements follow the accelerated and uninterrupted agenda of innovations that Itaú is going through. After announcing its Superapp with renewed features, and offering the best digital experience on the market, and being the first bank to announce Pix by Contact, Itaú shows its pioneering spirit in the sector. “We developed a tool that allowed us to bring to Pix the same ease, fluidity, and security of using wallets for credit and debit card payments. With this development, the technology will now be available to millions of consumers who use Pix as their main payment method. Pix is the future of payment methods in Brazil, and its evolutions have enormous positive potential for society, facilitating payment and receipt journeys for the entire chain,” says Mario Miguel, director of payments for individuals at Itaú.
