Retail sales increased 0.7% mom/sa in February

Supermarket sales reinforce positive monthly result

• In February, core retail sales advanced 1.2% mom/sa (Itaú: +1.4%), after declining 1.4% in January. Compared to the year-earlier period, sales expanded 4.7%.

• Broad retail sales, which include vehicles and construction material, increased 0.7% mom/sa (Itaú: +1.3%) and 3.3% yoy.

• Growth was widespread during the month, with seven out of ten broad retail segments showing gains (70% diffusion). The segment comprising “hypermarkets, supermarkets, food, beverages and tobacco”, with approximately 30% weight in the broad index, provided a significant contribution to the monthly reading by rising 1.5% mom/sa.
