The trade surplus in October reached $1.2 billion, beating our forecast ($800 million) and matching market consensus. The result is substantially smaller than the $5.8 billion surplus of one year earlier. The seasonally-adjusted annualized quarterly moving average was virtually unchanged at $32 billion ($33 billion in September). Over 12 months, the trade surplus receded to $48 billion from $53 billion. October figures reinforce the weakening trade surplus in the second half of 2019 due to the slowdown in global activity and rising imports.
