Weekly Elections Monitor – Who are the blank/null and undecided voters?

May 22, 2018

Blank and null voters are mainly women, from the Northeast region, with basic education, low income and over 35 years of age

Special comment: The latest available voting intention poll (CNT/MDA for May) showed a high percentage of blank/null (30%) and undecided (16%) voters. These percentages, mainly for blank/null, are significantly higher than in previous elections, but may recede as we approach the election date (this occurred in 2014).

The breakdown of the latest available Datafolha poll (for April) showed that blank and null voters are mainly women, from the Northeast region, with basic education, low income and over 35 years of age. This voter profile is similar to that of Lula’s (PT), Ciro Gomes’s (PDT) and Marina Silva’s (REDE).

In social media, João Amoedo (NOVO) remains the front runner in the weekly growth of follower’s, although Jair Bolsonaro (PSL) continues to lead in total number of followers. On Twitter, the "security" theme continues to lead the mentions, but the "election" theme has grown substantially in recent weeks.

Our monitor of economic policy signals highlights Ciro Gomes, who criticized the spending cap, the labor reform, the privatizations and the financial sector’s profits.
