With the end of the elections, this will be the last publication of the weekly election monitor. We thank all our readers and hope to have contributed to the debate in these 6 months of publications.

Jair Bolsonaro (PSL) became the 38th president of Brazil, with 55% of the valid votes in the second round. In the state government elections, the largest winners were the PSL, NOVO and center parties. PT, PSDB and MDB, seen as more traditional parties, came out with reduced numbers of governors compared to 2014.

Special comment: there are several challenges ahead for the newly elected president, especially in view of the need for legislative reforms to balance Brazil’s fiscal situation. We summarize below the measures being discussed, as well as the number of legislators required for approval.
