Itaú BBA - Socio-Environmental Responsibility

Socio-Environmental Responsibility

Itaú Unibanco is a part of one of the largest financial groups in the world. For more than a decade, we have been committed to sustainability in the financial markets.

We have played a central role in promoting the Equator Principles since 2004. In 2008 and 2009, Itaú Unibanco was selected by the largest financial institutions in the world as chairman of the Equator Principles Steering Committee, a testament to our global influence in support of the adoption of sound socio-environmental practices. Itaú Unibanco remains a member of the Steering Committee and has been spearheading numerous initiatives, such as the Equator Principles Strategic Review.

The voluntary Equator Principles are a set of criteria for determining, assessing and managing social and environmental risk in project finance as defined by Basel II. The principles are publically available on the website Signatory institutions recognize that the application of these Principles provides an opportunity for projects to be developed in a socially and environmentally responsible manner.

Since 1999, Itaú Unibanco has been the only bank from an emerging-market country to be a component of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. In 2010, for the second consecutive year, we obtained the highest score in the socio-environmental analysis of projects, achieving 93 points against a sector average of 50 points.
